Who is the growth simulator SIBYLA designed for?
The growth simulator SIBYLA is designed for:
students of forestry, ecological, biological, environmental, and natural sciences
teachers of secondary vocational schools, high schools, and universities specialised in forestry, ecological, biological, environmental, and natural sciences
researchers working in forestry, ecology, biology, natural, and environmental sciences
professionals from forestry practice
professionals from ecological and environmental institutions
all those interested in functions and possibilities of the growth simulator SIBYLA
The growth simulator has been parameterised for Slovak and German conditions, for spruce, fir, pine, beech and oak. In other countries and/or for other tree species, the simulator may not produce correct results !!!
What can the growth simulator be used for?
The growth simulator SIBYLA can be used:
as an alternative for or a supplement to classical yield tables
for the creation of specific tabular summaries and outputs about productive, ecological, and economic development of a forest
to update forest condition
as a component of national forest inventory that makes prognoses of forest development on inventory plots with cyclical calibration of the model
to check the production of forest stands
to optimise forest management
for the creation of management models
for planning the amount of tending and principal felling
to derive the elements of temporal arrangements of forests
to make a medium-term prognosis of timber felling possibilities
to optimise supply-demand relationships and logistics on timber market
for long-term prognoses of forest development aimed at production sustainability
to simulate and optimise the development of selection and close-to-nature forests
to simulate the development of forest landscape
to analyse the influence of climatic changes on forest growth, production and structure
to make a socio-economic sector analysis
to simulate natural forest development and succession after ecological disturbances
to simulate forest biodiversity and biomass
to simulate sequestration of carbon and other chemical elements in trees
as a support in the trade with carbon in forests
for education, training, and e-learning
What are the requirements on software and hardware ?
The program SIBYLA Suite is designed for computers with Windows operating system. Its functionality was tested for operating systems Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. It is required that the operating system is fully compatible with graphical functions DirectX (starting from version 8.1). It means that the operating system Windows NT is not compatible, since it only supports graphical functions of type OpenGL.

What kinds of versions of the growth simulator SIBYLA are available ?
SIBYLA Suite Standard
This is a basic version of the growth simulator consisting of all most important components for the full-value work including an example database SIBYLA.MDB. This version is also released as freeware. |
This is an extended version for professional users. In addition, this version contains the modules Kartograf and Agent, and example databases from permanent research plots, and a source code. This version is not released as freeware, and is intended for the scientists from the listed institutions who have participated in the development of the growth simulator. Cartographer is a simple GIS tool used for managing growth simulations in space. GIS contains a map of forest stands with integrated attributes from forest management plans, an othophoto map, and a digital terrain model of the forest unit. It offers a wide range of possibilities of selecting forest stands using a convenient menu of sampling criteria, as well as on the base of SQL tools. For selected forest stands it is possible to specify climate and soil data, to select thinning regimes and technological methods, as well as to run growth prognoses and to evaluate their results. At the same time, the module is capable of integrating the results of growth prognoses into thematic maps. Agent is the module for importing data from available forestry data sources, e.g. from forest management plans, maps in the form of GIS, etc. The module imports the data about the forest stands into the generator of forest structure, it prepares the terrain model, climate and soil characteristics from GIS layers, etc. |
